I'm thrilled! Rhode Island finally passed a bill banning the use of hand-held car phones. In June 2018 it becomes law. Cell phone use while driving is one of my pet peeves. It annoys me to no end when I see the tops of people's heads instead of their faces while they're behind the wheel of a two-ton killing machine.
Distracted driving is a public health issue. Accidents and deaths have surged since more and more people are talking, texting, tweeting, Facebooking, etc., while driving.
I admit that when I first got my iPhone years ago, I was enamored by all the bells the whistles. I didn't use it while my car was moving—and I have blue tooth for calls—but in the beginning I would check emails or Facebook while at a red light. I'm not proud of that. And after too many people blared their horns to get me moving because I'd be looking down and not up at the light, I realized how ridiculous I was being and how dangerous it was to have my phone as a driving companion.
I quit cold turkey.
My phone stays in my purse when I'm driving. When I need to make or answer a call, blue tooth is my friend. Emails and texts wait until I get home or am safely parked.
