May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I wish mainstream society were more open about the importance of mental healthโ for each of us individually and society generally. I'm glad this month of public awareness does that.
The best education I had in developing my psychotherapy skills wasn't my traditional education or the many workshops I've taken:
It was my own healing journey.
Therapists can only help people heal to the degree they've healed themselves.
Fortunately, I started therapy when I was 25 during my first clinical internship working with traumatized children. Little did I know that their trauma would trigger mine. That healing journey lasted four years until that therapist moved away. One year later I found a masterful therapist who also introduced me to the world of spiritual growth. That healing journey lasted 10 years. This man saved my emotional life and I'm forever grateful to him.
I'm sharing this to help normalize seeking therapy. If you're struggling with any form of mental illness, emotional distress, or simply having difficulty responding to life challenges, I strongly encourage you to seek out psychotherapy.
There is nothing wrong with you! You, like all of us, can benefit from professional assistance when necessary. (If you feel physically ill you'll see a medical doctor, right?)
At the same time I know it's not so easy to find therapists these days, especially therapists who take insurance. I'll post in the comment section, some resources to help you find someone in your local community.
If you're struggling, you don't need to be alone with your pain. While it may take some time to find the right person to work with, give yourself that gift of support.
You, and your emotional health, are worth it. ๐
